After the first ODI got abandoned due to rain, South Africa (SA) and West Indies (WI) will lock horns in the second ODI of the three-match series on Saturday, March 18, at Buffalo Park in East London. South Africa are riding high on the confidence coming into the series, having whitewashed the Windies in Tests by 2-0. The Proteas last played an ODI series against England in January-February 2023, winning by a margin of 2-1.

On the other hand, West Indies haven’t played ODI cricket in a long time, having played their last series against New Zealand at home in August 2022, in which they lost by 1-2. They don’t have an excellent record against South Africa, having only won a single bilateral series against the Rainbow nation in the 32-year-long ODI cricketing history between the two sides.

Other than that, the West Indies won a tri-series in South Africa in 1993, which also involved the home side and Pakistan. The Shai Hope-led side will be eager to end their series win drought this time.

SA vs WI Pitch Report:

Buffalo Park has witnessed 25 ODIs so far, where teams batting first have had a bit of an advantage as they’ve emerged victorious on 13 occasions. In the last three ODIs played at the venue, fast bowlers have got reasonable assistance on the fresh new wicket bowling in the first innings hence batting against the new ball will be challenging.

The average first innings score at the venue is 225, while the highest total recorded is 369/6. Captain winning the toss will look to the field first, keeping the venue’s record in mind.

SA vs WI Probable Playing XIs:

South Africa (SA):

Quinton de Kock (wk), Temba Bavuma (c), Reeza Hendricks, Rassie van der Dussen, Tristan Stubbs, Tony de Zorzi, Andile Phehlukwayo, Lungi Ngidi, Gerald Coetzee, Bjorn Fortuin, Sisanda Magala

West Indies (WI):

Shai Hope (c) (wk), Brandon King, Shamarh Brooks, Nicholas Pooran, Kyle Mayers, Roston Chase, Jason Holder, Alzarri Joseph, Odean Smith, Akeal Hosein, Shannon Gabriel

SA vs WI Probable Best Performers

Probable Best Batter

Shai Hope:

The West Indies captain has been one of the consistent performers in the format over the past few years. Hope will bathe for the first time in South Africa and look to lead from the front by scoring big. The 29-year-old will hold the key for his side and hold one end to keep the scoreboard moving.

Probable Best Bowler

Lungi Ngidi:

Lungi Ngidi has been bowling well in 2023, as he picked up 4/62 in the last ODI against England. Being the most experienced bowler in the squad, the speedster will lead the pace attack and look to give some early strikes to his team.
