India and Australia locked horns in the third and final ODI of the series on Wednesday, September 27 at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot. Having already lost the series by 0-2, Australian skipper Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bat first. The decision was vindicated by opener David Warner who played a breathtaking knock of 56 (34) to get his team off to an electrifying start adding 78 runs in 49 balls.

After Warner’s wicket, Mitchell Marsh and Steve Smith continued the onslaught with their 137-run stand off 119 balls. Marsh fell agonizingly short of his hundred getting dismissed for 96 (84) smashing 13 fours and three sixes. Steve Smith also scored a brilliant 74 (61) before Rajkot’s heat got the better of him and he got dismissed lbw by Mohammed Siraj.

Marnus Labuschagne (72 off 58) continued his brilliant form but failed to get support from other batters. As a result, Australia posted 352/7 in their allotted 50 overs with Jasprit Bumrah (3/81) finishing as the pick of the bowlers for India.

In reply, India also got off to a remarkable start with captain Rohit Sharma going all guns blazing right from the word go. Washington Sundar (18 off 30), who was promoted up the order, failed to get going at the other end and finally lost his wickets against Glenn Maxwell leaving India on 74/1 after 10.5 overs.

At the other end, captain Sharma continued his explosive innings of 81 off 57 but eventually got dismissed courtesy of Maxwell’s one-handed stunner off his own bowling in the 21st over. India’s chase master Virat Kohli (56 off 61) also got dismissed after getting set leaving India on 171/3.

Indian batters succumbed under scoreboard pressure

Shreyas Iyer (48 off 43) and KL Rahul (26 off 30) added 52 runs for the fourth wicket off 44 balls. However, both failed to keep going further mounting pressure on India. Only Ravindra Jadeja (35 off 36) showed some fight at the end but the required run rate had gone out of rich. As a result, India got bundled out for 286 in 49.4 overs and lost the match by 66 runs.

Glenn Maxwell was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors who registered figures of 4/40 in 10 overs. Courtesy of their win, Australia managed to avoid a whitewash and will now head into the World Cup 2023 on a winning note.

Meanwhile, X was abuzz with reactions on Australia’s win. Here are some of the posts:
