Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Suresh Raina has subtly taken aim at Indian Premier League (IPL) teams such as Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC).

Suresh Raina subtly critiques IPL teams without a title

Despite their longstanding presence in the IPL spanning all 17 seasons, franchises like DC, PBKS and RCB have yet to taste victory in the tournament. As the action unfolds in the ongoing 17th edition, these teams find themselves languishing at the bottom of the points table, with DC occupying the eighth spot, PBKS trailing behind in ninth, and RCB languishing at the very bottom of the standings.

In an interview with Lallantop, Raina, who have won 4 IPL trophies alongside CSK, highlighted his former franchise distinct approach to post-match celebrations as a factor contributing to their success, boasting 5 IPL titles and 2 Champions League trophies.

“Chennai never partied. That’s why they have been the most successful. 2-3 teams who partied have not won the IPL yet,” Raina said.

When asked if his remarks were directed towards RCB in particular, Raina responded with a chuckle, avoiding singling out any specific team.

“No, there are a few teams who haven’t won, they must have partied hard. We (CSK) didn’t do it. That’s why we have 5 IPL trophies and 2 Champions League trophies. MI also have won 5 trophies,” the 37-year-old added.

Raina reveals CSK’s success secret

During the early years of the IPL, extravagant after-match parties, accompanied by glitz, glamour, and Bollywood presence, were common. However, Raina revealed that CSK chose to distance themselves from such festivities, prioritizing a serious and disciplined approach to the game. According to Raina, this commitment to professionalism translated directly into on-field results.

“If you party late into the night, how will you play in the morning? In May-June’s heat, how will you play afternoon games if you have partied all night?,” the Muradnagar-born cricketer stated.

Raina disclosed that the decision to eschew late-night revelries was a collective one, driven by the entire squad’s dedication to their craft. While acknowledging the influence of captain MS Dhoni‘s leadership, Raina emphasized the team’s shared determination to perform at their best, both for their franchise and their nation.

“The entire team was particular about not partying late into the night. We are also playing for India, keep in mind. If I don’t play well, why will my captain select me? Now, I am free, I have retired. We can party,” Raina concluded.
