Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) quest for a place in the IPL 2024 playoffs suffered a significant setback following their heavy defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Wednesday.
The 10-wicket loss not only halted LSG’s momentum but also severely hampered their net run rate. Currently sitting at the sixth position in the points table with 12 points from 12 matches, LSG face an uphill battle to qualify for the knockout stages.
Playoffs qualification scenarios for LSG
LSG’s hopes rest on winning their remaining two matches. This would take them to a maximum of 16 points, a number which might be enough for a top-four finish.
With just two away games left against Delhi Capitals (DC) and Mumbai Indians (MI), even victories in both may not suffice for LSG’s qualification, given that four other teams – SRH, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) – are in positions to potentially finish with 16 points or more, with each even capable of reaching 18 points.

LSG could still make the playoffs with a single win, but that would require a series of favourable outcomes in other matches, similar to the situations faced by SRH and DC. The upcoming match between DC and LSG in Delhi on May 14 is set to be pivotal; the winner of this game will cap the loser’s maximum possible points at 14, making it a critical encounter for both teams’ playoffs chances.
Expert Opinions
Cricket analysts believe LSG’s qualification chances are slim but not entirely out of the picture. However, they need a miracle combination of results alongside their own victories in the remaining matches.
