KL Rahul‘s leadership role in Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) is under scrutiny after the team’s dismal performance against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Match 57 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.
Owner’s outburst raises questions
In the aftermath of LSG’s defeat against SRH, owner Sanjiv Goenka‘s public display of discontent with Rahul has sparked rumors about the captain’s future with the team. Rahul’s leadership abilities have been called into question, particularly after LSG’s inability to put up a competitive performance on the field. Notably, LSG’s defeat against SRH showcased a stark contrast in performance, with SRH’s openers dominating the pitch, leaving LSG’s players in a helpless position.
Potential resignation looms
Sources close to the team suggest that Rahul, who was signed before the 2022 auction for a INR ₹17 crore, is facing uncertainty regarding his retention for the mega auctions in 2025. Speculation is rife that he might choose to step down and focus solely on his batting for the remaining games. While there’s no official confirmation yet, the possibility of Rahul focusing solely on his batting in the upcoming matches is being considered by the management.
“There is a five-day gap before the next game against DC. As of now, no decision has been taken but it is understood that if Rahul plans to just concentrate on his batting for the remaining two games, the management won’t mind,” an IPL source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Vice-captain poised to take charge
Should Rahul decide to relinquish his captaincy, vice-captain Nicholas Pooran emerges as the frontrunner to lead the team in the remaining fixtures. Pooran has been one of LSG’s standout performers with the bat and could provide the leadership needed to rally the team in the final stages of the tournament.
Slim playoff hopes remain
Despite the setback against SRH, LSG still hold a mathematical chance of making it to the playoffs if they manage to win their remaining two games against Delhi Capitals (DC) and Mumbai Indians (MI). However, their current net run-rate presents a significant obstacle in their path to qualification.
