Vincent Masekesa took a 5 wicket haul on his Test debut for Zimbabwe

Test cricket has always been a platform where legends are born, and for bowlers, nothing marks a grand entry quite like a five-wicket haul on debut. Zimbabwe, though not traditionally known for its bowling dominance, has witnessed a few standout moments over the years. One such moment arrived recently when Vincent Masekesa etched his name in history during the ongoing Test series against Bangladesh. Let’s take a look at the three Zimbabwean bowlers who have taken five-wicket hauls on their Test debut.

3 bowlers to pick a 5-wicket haul on Test debut for Zimbabwe

1) Andy Blignaut – A powerful debut in Bulawayo (2001)

Arnoldus Mauritius Blignaut, more popularly known as Andy Blignaut, became the first Zimbabwean to claim a five-wicket haul on his Test debut. Facing Bangladesh in April 2001 at Bulawayo, Blignaut made an immediate impact by picking up 5 wickets for 73 runs in 23.3 overs during the visitors’ first innings. His fiery pace and aggression didn’t stop there—he followed it up with 3 more wickets in the second innings, ending the match with 8 wickets in total. Zimbabwe went on to register a thumping victory by an innings and 32 runs.

2) John Nyumbu – The off-spinner who troubled South Africa (2014)

Fast-forward to 2014, when Zimbabwe hosted South Africa for a solitary Test in Harare. John Nyumbu, an off-spinner making his Test debut, rose to the occasion with a spirited performance. Bowling a marathon 49.3 overs in the first innings, Nyumbu claimed 5 wickets for 157 runs. His scalps included the likes of Faf du Plessis, who narrowly missed a century. Though South Africa clinched the match by 9 wickets, Nyumbu’s maiden effort was widely applauded and cemented his name in the record books.

3) Vincent Masekesa – A bright spark against Bangladesh (2025)

The newest name on the list is Masekesa, who made headlines during the second Test of Zimbabwe’s tour of Bangladesh in 2025. Despite Bangladesh amassing a commanding total of 444 in their first innings, Masekesa stood out with a determined bowling display. He scalped 5 crucial wickets, including the prized dismissal of centurion Mehidy Hasan Miraz (104). His performance not only added a silver lining to Zimbabwe’s tough day but also highlighted the arrival of a promising talent on the big stage.
