Mitchell Starc warns Harshit Rana after facing his bouncers on Day 2 of the Perth Test

The Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 kicked off with a bang, as Day 1 of the first Test saw an astonishing 17 wickets tumble, marking the most wickets to fall on an opening day of a Test match in Australia since 1952.

The action continued on Day 2 at the Optus Stadium in Perth, with Indian bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and debutant Harshit Rana leading the charge against a beleaguered Australian batting lineup.

Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliance shines through

Bumrah, India’s stand-in captain, made a resounding impact on Day 1 with his exceptional bowling, claiming four wickets and leaving Australia reeling at 67 for 7. His performance was pivotal after India’s batting lineup faltered, managing only 150 runs in their first innings. Bumrah’s opening spell was mesmerizing; he exploited the grass-covered pitch that offered significant seam movement and bounce, dismissing key Australian players including Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja.

On Day 2, Bumrah struck immediately, sending Alex Carey back to the pavilion with his very first delivery. This set the tone for another challenging day for the Australian batters, who struggled to cope with the Indian pace attack. Bumrah’s figures were a testament to his skill and determination, as he aimed for a five-wicket haul.

Joining Bumrah in wreaking havoc was debutant Harshit Rana, who showcased his talent by dismissing Nathan Lyon and contributing significantly to India’s dominance. With his ability to generate bounce from the pitch, Rana proved that he could hold his own against seasoned opponents. His performance drew a cheeky remark from Mitchell Starc “I bowl faster than you. I have a long memory,” indicating the competitive spirit between the bowlers. Rana’s impressive bowling not only earned him a wicket but also established him as a promising player to watch in this series.

The match has been characterized by fierce competition between two struggling batting units. Both teams entered this Test with underwhelming performances in recent outings, and Day 1 reflected that struggle. However, as Day 2 unfolded, it became clear that India’s bowlers were determined to capitalize on their early advantage. With Australia bundled for 104 trailing by 46 runs, every wicket became crucial as they sought to avoid further embarrassment on home soil, when India comes to bat in the second session of Day 2.
