South African star David Miller came agonizingly close to securing a historic victory for his team in the thrilling T20 World Cup 2024 final against India. With the match hanging in the balance, Miller was the key player expected to guide South Africa over the finish line. After Heinrich Klaasen‘s dismissal, the responsibility fell squarely on Miller’s shoulders. Facing the first ball of the last over against Hardik Pandya, with South Africa needing 16 runs to lift their first-ever World Cup, Miller aimed to turn the tide in his team’s favour.

David Miller’s efforts goes in vain

The first ball of the over was a low wide full toss from Pandya. Miller lined up to heave it towards long-off, and it appeared to be sailing over Suryakumar Yadav. However, Suryakumar did the unthinkable and took a spectacular catch at the boundary rope, ending Miller’s innings at 21 runs off 17 balls. The catch has been widely regarded as the World Cup-winning moment for India. With Miller’s departure, South Africa’s hopes of claiming their maiden World Cup title were dashed, leaving the cricketer and his teammates in tears.

Emotional message after tragic defeat

The next day, Miller posted an emotional note on his Instagram story, expressing his devastation over the loss. Despite the heartbreak, he conveyed immense pride in his team, highlighting the incredible journey they shared over the past month, marked by both triumphs and challenges.

“I am gutted!! Really tough pill to swallow after what transpired 2 days ago. Words don’t explain how I am feeling. One thing I do know is how proud I am of this unit. This journey was an incredible one, with highs and lows throughout the entire month. We have endured pain, but I know this team has the resilience and will keep raising the bar,” Miller wrote in his Instagram story.

The cricketing world was abuzz with speculation, as fans and analysts alike pondered whether this was the end of Miller’s illustrious T20I career. The emotional tone of his message added fuel to the fire, causing concern among South African cricket supporters.

The Proteas star addresses retirement rumors

In response to the swirling rumours, Miller has now clarified his stance on his T20I future. Taking to Instagram once again, Miller stated unequivocally that he has not retired from T20 international cricket and remains available for selection.

“Contrary to reports, I have not retired from T20 international cricket. I will continue to be available for the Proteas. The best is yet to come,” Miller wrote, putting to rest any doubts about his commitment to the South African team.
