The third day of the second Test between India and Bangladesh at Green Park, Kanpur, was completely washed out due to wet outfield conditions, following overnight rains. This unfortunate turn of events marked the second consecutive day without any play, as inclement weather also prevented action on Day 2.

A fan’s frustration goes viral on social media

Many supporters, who traveled from distant locations to witness the much-anticipated match, expressed their disappointment at the lack of play. One particularly vocal fan took to social media to voice his frustrations. In a video shared online, he highlighted that despite no rain falling on the ground, the authorities had failed to prepare the pitch for play.

“This Kanpur stadium is so old, there’s no drainage system or anything. It’s not raining at all. If it had been any other venue, the covers would’ve been off by now and the match would’ve begun. There’s not a drop of rain since morning and water is just lying there on covers. The conditions of the ground are appalling and I don’t think it will get any more matches going forward,” the fan said in the video.

Concerns over venue readiness

Earlier, Sanjay Kapoor, the venue director for the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA), had assured that they were adequately prepared for heavy rainfall predicted before the game. Additionally, prior to the match, the Uttar Pradesh Public Works Department deemed the upper block of the C stand unsafe and advised against filling it to full capacity.

Historical context of Green Park

Green Park has been the host to 40 international matches, which include 24 Tests, 15 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and a single T20I. The ongoing Test marks the 24th Test at this venue. The last match held here, between India and New Zealand in November 2021, ended in a draw due to poor light on Day 5.

Hope for action in the coming days

As the match has seen only 35 overs bowled so far and two full days lost, fans are eager for some cricket action on Days 4 and 5. Weather forecasts predict a 20% chance of rain on Day 4 and a 10% chance on Day 5, leading supporters to hope for improved conditions and an opportunity for play.
