Bangladesh‘s seasoned all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has decided to retire from T20 Internationals (T20Is), while also expressing his intent to step away from Test cricket after the upcoming home series against South Africa in Mirpur next month. Shakib, widely regarded as Bangladesh’s greatest all-rounder, has consistently demonstrated his prowess with both bat and ball on the international stage. Over the years, the 36-year-old has solidified his position as a key figure in Bangladesh cricket.

A stellar T20I and IPL career

Having participated in every T20 World Cup since its inception in 2007, Shakib’s decision to bid farewell to the shortest format marks the end of an era. In 129 T20I matches, Shakib accumulated 2,551 runs at a strike rate of 121.18. As a bowler, he claimed 149 wickets, further cementing his legacy as one of the finest all-rounders in the game. Beyond international cricket, Shakib has also been a key performer in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Over his 71 IPL matches, he scored 793 runs at a strike rate of 124.49 and took 63 wickets with an impressive economy rate of 7.44. Throughout his IPL career, Shakib has delivered several match-winning performances, showcasing his all-round talent on a global platform.

3 teams who can target Shakib Al Hasan in the mega auction:

1. Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

Team Context:
Chennai Super Kings have always thrived on experience, consistency, and cricketing intelligence. Under MS Dhoni leadership, CSK has historically shown a preference for experienced players who can handle pressure and contribute in multiple departments and it would be expected continue to flourish under Ruturaj Gaikwad‘s captaincy.

Reasons to Bid:
Shakib, with his vast experience, is a perfect fit for CSK’s philosophy. His all-round capabilities – a left-handed middle-order batter and a skilled left-arm orthodox spinner – would provide balance and flexibility to the side. Additionally, Shakib’s ability to bowl in the powerplay and control the game in the middle overs could be crucial for CSK, especially on slow-turning Chepauk pitches. CSK have relied heavily on seasoned players like Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja in the past, and with Jadeja remaining the only one now, Shakib could serve as an ideal partner for him. His leadership qualities and calm demeanor also make him a natural fit for CSK’s environment.

2. Rajasthan Royals (RR)

Team Context:
Rajasthan Royals have a history of investing in multi-dimensional players who can contribute both with bat and ball. Although they have a strong spin department with the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal, they could use a player like Shakib to add more depth to their all-rounder pool.

Reasons to Bid:
Shakib’s experience on slower wickets and his ability to play smart cricket in tough situations makes him an excellent candidate for RR. With RR often looking for players who can contribute with both bat and ball, Shakib fits the bill perfectly. His presence would strengthen RR’s middle order while adding a spin option to complement Chahal and Ashwin. Additionally, his ability to hold the innings together in difficult situations would be beneficial, especially when RR’s aggressive top order falters. Shakib’s experience in big matches could also guide the younger players in RR’s squad, helping them stay competitive in crucial stages of the tournament.

3. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

Team Context:
Kolkata Knight Riders have a long history with Shakib, as he has been an integral part of their two IPL title victories in 2012 and 2014. KKR has always valued his contributions, and their strong connection with him could see them bidding for his services again.

Reasons to Bid:
KKR’s spin-friendly home ground at Eden Gardens suits Shakib’s bowling style perfectly, and his past success with the franchise makes him a familiar and trusted asset. His all-round ability to contribute with both bat and ball makes him a perfect fit for KKR’s plans. With Sunil Narine not being as consistent in recent seasons, Shakib could provide the team with another reliable spin option and strengthen the middle order. KKR have always emphasized loyalty and comfort with players who know the setup, making Shakib a likely target to bolster their squad as they aim for a balanced combination of experience and youth.
