In a historic moment for cricket, Harry Singh, the son of former Indian cricketer RP Singh, took the field for England as a 12th man in the first Test against Sri Lanka on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.

The match taking place at the Old Trafford in Manchester marks a significant milestone not only for Harry but also for his family, as he follows in the footsteps of his father, who played 59 first-class matches between 1986 and 1996 for Uttar Pradesh and the English county sides.

Harry Singh: A rising star in English cricket

Harry, a talented all-rounder, has made a name for himself in English cricket. Earlier this year, he made his List A debut for Lancashire in the One-Day Cup. Despite limited opportunities, the 20-year-old has showcased his potential with both bat and ball.

Harry has scored 87 runs in seven List A matches, with a strike rate of 64.44. He has also contributed wickets with his off-spin bowling. His journey began in 2022 when he was selected to represent England’s U19 team against Sri Lanka.

Anticipation and expectations from Harry Singh

As Harry took to the field on Day 1 of the Manchester Test, expectations were high from fans and cricket pundits alike. His all-round abilities, combined with the experience gained from playing in various domestic tournaments, have set the stage for a promising career. The young cricketer’s presence on the field, replacing vice-captain Harry Brook for few overs, is particularly significant as it highlights the growing trend of players with familial ties to the sport making their mark on the international stage.

The first Test between England and Sri Lanka is part of a three-match series, with both teams vying for crucial points in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings. England, under the leadership of stand-in skipper Ollie Pope, aims to build on their recent successes.
