On Sunday (August 25 ), Spain‘s national cricket team achieved a historic milestone by setting a new world record for the most consecutive wins in Men’s T20 Internationals (T20Is). This remarkable achievement came with a seven-wicket victory over Greece during the Europe T20 World Cup Sub Regional Qualifier C, held in Guernsey.

Breaking the previous record of India and Afghanistan

Spain’s triumph over Greece extended their winning streak to 14 consecutive T20I matches, surpassing the previous record of 13 consecutive wins held jointly by Malaysia (2022) and Bermuda. Before Spain’s achievement, India, Afghanistan and Romania each held a record of 12 consecutive T20I wins. The all-time record for consecutive T20I wins, across both men’s and women’s cricket, remains with the Thailand women’s team, who secured 17 straight victories.

“It’s been a long road, but to get 14 consecutive wins is incredible. It is something we can be proud of, congratulations to all the players, coaches and those people who make this possible. Onward and upward! Let’s go Spain,” the post reads.

Impressive streak set by Spain

Spain’s last T20I defeat occurred nearly two years ago against Italy. Since then, the team has been on an impressive winning run, securing victories in series against the Isle of Man, Jersey and Croatia. Their streak was briefly interrupted last year when a match against the Isle of Man was abandoned due to rain. In that series, Spain demonstrated their dominance by dismissing the Isle of Man for just 10 runs and achieving the target in only two deliveries.

Victory over Greece

In their latest match, Greece batted first and managed to score 96 runs for 9 wickets. Sajid Afridi was Greece’s top scorer with 27 runs, while Mohammad Atif was the only other batter to reach 20 runs. Spain’s Yasir Ali excelled with the ball, claiming three wickets for 12 runs, supported by Mohammad Atif and Charlie Rumistrzewicz, who each took two wickets. Spain successfully chased the target of 97 runs in 13 overs, with Hamza Saleem Dar leading the charge with an unbeaten 32 runs.

A proud moment for Spain cricket team

Spanish national cricket team head coach Corey Rutgers expressed his pride in the team’s achievement, stating, ” “A proud record to be notified about today, we obviously don’t play for records but this does feel special for the group. It has been a transformative few years in Spain, and a lot of credit goes to players who sacrifice a lot of their time to play for Espana, the management and my coaching staff. Couldn’t be prouder of all involved,”

Spain’s success in T20Is highlights their growing prominence in international cricket. They currently lead Group A in the ongoing Europe T20 World Cup Sub Regional Qualifier C, having won three out of their four matches, with one game ending in no result.
