In a low-scoring encounter at New York’s Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on Monday, June 4, South Africa emerged victorious over Sri Lanka by six wickets in their group stage match of the T20 World Cup 2024. The Proteas’ bowlers played a crucial role in dismantling the Sri Lankan batting lineup, bundling them out for a mere 77 runs.

Keshav Maharaj’s dominance with the ball

South Africa’s decision to bowl first paid off handsomely as their bowlers put up a commanding performance. The powerplay yielded only 24 runs for Sri Lanka, setting the tone for a dominant display by the Proteas. The standout performer was left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj, who played a pivotal role in dismantling the Sri Lankan middle order.

Maharaj came into the attack right after the powerplay, conceding just six runs off his first over. His second over proved to be even more impactful, as he dismissed Sri Lankan captain Wanindu Hasaranga for a two-ball duck, stumped while trying to take on the spinner. Maharaj struck again off the very next ball, removing Sadeera Samarawickrama, who chopped the ball onto his stumps while attempting a cut shot. This double strike left Sri Lanka reeling at 32/4 in the ninth over. Maharaj finished his spell with impressive figures of 2/22.

Anrich Nortje’s spectacular spell for South Africa

Anrich Nortje further compounded Sri Lanka’s woes with a phenomenal bowling performance. Nortje delivered a lethal spell, finishing with envious figures of 4/7 in four overs. His fiery pace and precision were too much for the Sri Lankan batters to handle. As a result, Sri Lanka was bowled out for their lowest total in T20 cricket, managing only 77 runs in 19.1 overs. Kusal Mendis was the top-scorer for Sri Lanka, contributing 19 runs off 30 balls.

South Africa’s chase

Chasing a modest target of 78, South Africa achieved the required runs with the loss of four wickets. The Proteas, led by Aiden Markram, displayed composure and skill to notch up the victory. Despite losing a few wickets, the target was never out of reach, and South Africa secured the win comfortably.
