Michael Atherton, former England captain, was in awe of Rachin Ravindra’s performances in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India. Following the Kiwis’ win over Sri Lanka in their final group stage clash in Bengaluru, Atherton stated that the ‘cricketing world is Ravindra’s oyster’.
Atherton also stated that New Zealand captain Kane Williamson is back on track after making a comeback to the side from injury. NZ were ready to carry Williasom even with his injury before the skipper broke his thumb, asserted Atherton.
“New Zealand were prepared to carry Williamson, even though he was not available at the start. His form, after such a long absence, looked remarkably unaffected in his comeback game, until he broke his thumb in a freak accident. Now he is back again, calmly steering the ship,” Atherton wrote in The Times.
He further spoke about Ravindra who is having an unforgettable campaign in the ongoing tournament. He also stated that the youngster will be in demand in franchise cricket after the marquee event. It is worth noting that the 23-year-old is currently the second-highest runs-corer in the ongoing tournament with 565 runs in nine games at an average of 70.62 which includes three centuries and two half-centuries.
“The cricketing world is his oyster. New Zealand’s population resource may be comparatively thin, but they continue to unearth and produce good talent. Ravindra will be in demand, as many of the Kiwis are, but they seem to handle the franchise conundrum deftly,” Atherton added.

New Zealand made their best of the starts with four consecutive wins but lost their rhythm as they suffered four defeats on the trot. However, a win over Sri Lanka helped them almost guarantee their spot in the semi-final of the ongoing tournament.
The Black Caps are currently placed fourth in the ODI Cup points standings and are fighting against Pakistan for the last spot in the semi-final. India, Australia, and South Africa are the other three teams that have advanced to the knockout stage. The semi-finals will be contested at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and Eden Gardens in Kolkata, respectively.
