In the fourth match of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2024, Sydney Thunder‘s left-arm spinner Samantha Bates delivered a stunning moment of cricketing brilliance, clean-bowling Hobart Hurricanes’ power-hitter Chloe Tryon. Bates’ precision ball rattled Tryon’s stumps, adding a memorable highlight to Sydney Thunder’s intense clash with Hobart Hurricanes.
Samantha Bates incredible delivery
The defining delivery came during the 16th over of the first innings. As Tryon attempted a sweep shot to target the leg side, Bates’ clever spin deceived her completely, with the ball sneaking past her bat to crash into the leg stump. The wicket left Tryon with a score of 0 from 3 balls, showcasing Bates’ expertise and perfect timing in breaking a potentially dangerous partnership.

Bates’ performance extended beyond a single delivery, as she displayed consistent accuracy throughout her four-over spell. Finishing with impressive figures of 3 wickets for 20 runs, Bates maintained an economy rate of 5.00, becoming one of the standout players for Sydney Thunder in the match.

Nicola Carey all-round dominance
Batting first, Hobart Hurricanes set a competitive target of 142, ending their innings at 141/7 in the allocated 20 overs. Nicola Carey led the scoring for Hobart, smashing 52 off 38 balls with a flurry of seven boundaries. Carey’s aggressive batting proved crucial in setting a strong target against Sydney Thunder’s bowlers.
In response, Sydney Thunder struggled to gain momentum, losing wickets at regular intervals and ultimately collapsing at 110 runs in the 18th over. Phoebe Litchfield, the team’s captain, made a valiant attempt to anchor the innings but received little support from the middle and lower order, resulting in a 31-run defeat for Sydney Thunder.
Heather Graham emerged as the top bowler for Hobart Hurricanes, delivering a stellar performance with figures of 3 wickets for 19 runs in her four overs. Her disciplined bowling effectively curtailed Sydney Thunder’s scoring, making it challenging for the opposition to mount a successful chase.
For her all-round excellence – scoring a vital half-century and contributing with the ball – Carey earned the well-deserved Player of the Match award. Her innings, combined with her one-wicket haul, played an instrumental role in Hobart’s victory, giving the team an early boost in the WBBL 2024 season.
