Pakistan are one of the most sought-after cricketing nations in the world at the moment and it is largely due to the efforts of their current all-format skipper Babar Azam. However, the foundation of their success was laid down by the legendary Imran Khan, who led the country to its maiden World Cup title on March 25 in 1992.

The Pakistan team, led by the inspirational Imran Khan, opted to bat first in the showpiece event. However, their decision came back to haunt them as both their openers Aamer Sohail and Ramiz Raja were dismissed cheaply by the English bowlers.

The Asian outfit was in need of a rescue act, and it was their skipper who led the charge from the front. Imran Khan’s dogged half-century, coupled with Javed Miandad’s gritty innings, took the side to safety as the duo stitched an invaluable 139-run stand for the third wicket.

While Imran and Miandad’s partnership steadied the ship for the Men in Green, it was Inzamam-ul-Haq and Wasim Akram, who added the finishing touch to the innings with a brisk partnership. Inzamam added 42 runs off just 35 deliveries, while Akram’s explosive 33 off 18 deliveries propelled Pakistan to a competitive total of 249 runs.

Chasing their maiden World Cup title, England’s top-order crumbled under pressure. They lost four of their top five batters inside the first 21 overs of the chase and were struggling to keep up with the asking rate. But, Neil Fairbrother’s stoic partnership with the enigmatic Allan Lamb provided a glimmer of hope for the English side.

However, fate had other plans as Wasim Akram dished out two magical deliveries to get rid of Lamb and Chris Lewis on consecutive deliveries to derail the English reply. Fairbrother was next to depart after a fighting half-century, and although the lower-order batters put up a valiant fight, there was no stopping the Pakistan bowlers on that day.

The last wicket, quite fittingly, was scalped by Imran Khan, who lifted the trophy for his country for the first time in the history.
