The Australian women’s cricket team is known for its dominance. The current Australian women’s team has mastered the art of winning to unbelievable perfection. Let’s go through one of their most remarkable wins as on March 8 in 2020, the Australia women’s team clinched its fifth T20 World Cup title.

It was the occasion of International Women’s Day, and what better day to witness two quality women’s teams fighting it out for one last time for the ultimate glory. While the Australian women were heading to seal another trophy, it was a historic maiden T20 World Cup final appearance for the India Women. This final, played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, also turned out to be historic in the world of sports, as this solitary match recorded the highest attendance for women’s cricket (for one particular game).

Australia women won the toss and opted to bat first. Their openers, Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney, completely took on the Indian bowling attack right from the word go. On the part of the India women, they had disappointed with their fielding display. Healy was dropped early on in her innings, and same was the case with Mooney.

Both openers ensured to capitalise and make the Women in Blue pay for their mistakes. Healy scored a quick-fire 75 off 39 balls, while Mooney top-scored with an unbeaten 78 off 54 balls. From India, Deepti Sharma, Poonam Yadav and Radha Yadav shared four wickets between themselves. Australia posted a huge total of 184/4 in their 20 overs.

In the chase, India women made a complete mess of the proceedings. By the end of the powerplay, India’s top-order of Shafali Verma, Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur were all back in the pavilion. Taniya Bhatia retired hurt with a concussion fear. Only all-rounder Deepti Sharma stood up to top-score with a 35-ball 33, but it was all in vain as India eventually got bundled out for 99 in 19.1 overs. Megan Schutt was the pick of the bowlers from Australia, as she bagged four crucial wickets and conceded just 18 runs in 3.1 overs.

Thus, Australia defeated India by a mammoth 85 runs to take home their record fifth T20 world title.
