OTD 2012 – Sachin Tendulkar smashes 100th century

Mar 16, 2023

One of the most legendary batters of all time, Sachin Tendulkar is widely revered as one of the greatest players to play the game. The Master Blaster’s record in international cricket speaks for itself. He played exactly 200 Tests for India, where he scored 15921 runs, his record in ODIs is no joke either, as he boasts a whopping 18426 runs in 463 matches.

Despite numerous achievements throughout his stellar career, perhaps the most iconic moment of the Indian great’s career was his 100th career century, which he scored against Bangladesh at the 2012 Asia Cup. India took on Bangladesh in the 4th match of the tournament back on March 16, 2012.

Bangladesh won the toss and elected to field first, and they got just the start that they needed as Gautam Gambhir was dismissed for just 11 runs by Shaiful Islam. However, Tendulkar, at the non-striker’s end, took charge of the innings and found a dependable batting partner in Virat Kohli.

The Master Blaster took quite a lot of time to notch runs on the scoreboard, and as finally achieved the remarkable feat of scoring his 100th century. Tendulkar managed to score 114 off 147 deliveries. Virat Kohli also came through for India, scoring 66 runs. In the end, Suresh Raina’s 51 off 38 deliveries propelled India to a score of 289 runs.

However, many argued that Tendulkar’s slow innings hindered India’s progress as the target could have been much bigger for their opponents to chase. Bangladesh got off to a sensational start to the match as opener Tamim Iqbal scored 70 runs off 99 deliveries.

The joining contributions of the middle order came through for Bangladesh in the end as Jahurul Islam and Nasir Hossain, both completed their half centuries. Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim were the eventual stars of the game as their knocks of 49 and 46 runs, respectively, guided Bangladesh to a significant win against the Men in Blue. Due to Bangladesh’s commendable show, Master Blaster’s 100th century remained in shadows.
