T20 World Cup 2023: Deepti Sharma becomes India’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is

Feb 17, 2023

India’s all-rounder Deepti Sharma entered the record books recently as she became the first Indian across the men’s and women’s game to take 100 T20I wickets – a feat she recorded in the group match against the West Indies in the ongoing 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup, in South Africa.

The 25-year-old achieved this remarkable feat, by dismissing Shemaine Campbell, Stefanie Taylor and Afy Fletcher. She conceded only 15 runs in her four overs, thus becoming the pick of the bowlers for India in breaking the back of the West Indies and restricting them to a below-par total.

Elucidating further on her newly-earned record, the all-rounder has scalped 100 wickets in 89 T20Is. She went past her fellow teammate Poonam Yadav, who has bagged 98 wickets in 72 matches. The striking part of Deepti’s record is that her T20Is wickets tally reads more than Yuzvendra Chahal’s, who has claimed 91 wickets in men’s T20Is for India. Deepti Sharma is currently ranked ninth in the overall list of highest wicket-takers in women’s T20Is.

Deepti Sharma has over the years been a key player for India, as she has groomed herself into a quality all-rounder who can win matches for India. Handy with the bat and handy with the ball, she on multiple occasions has rescued India from the most difficult of situations.

In the recently conducted inaugural Women’s Premier League auction in Mumbai on February 13, Deepti was one of the costliest players, who was roped in by UP Warriorz for INR 2.60 cr.

The Agra-born cricketer made her international debut for India Women against South Africa in 2014 in an One-day international game. She will look to make more valuable contributions with the bat in the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup and help her side to win the title.
