South Africa are all set to take the stage alongside Australia for the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 on Sunday, February 26 at the Newlands in Cape Town. South Africa have had a rollercoaster ride thus far in the ongoing T20 extravaganza.
In the tournament opener, they suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka. The hosts came back strongly in their next game, hammering New Zealand by 65 runs. But Sune Luus & Co. failed to continue with the winning momentum and succumbed to defeat at the hands of Australia in the 15th match of the competition.
However, the hosts were quite clinical in a must-win game against Bangladesh and routed Nigar Sultana & Co. to seal the playoff berth. Then in the high-voltage semi-final clash against England, they held their nerves and won the game by six runs. Tazmin Brits was awarded the Player of the Match award for scoring a magnificent half-century and taking four catches. This will be the first-ever summit clash for South Africa in the history of T20 World Cups and they would look to put up a show in front of their home crowd.
Australia, on the other hand, have been like their dominant self in the marquee tournament. The defending champions bossed the group stages, registering comprehensive wins in all of their matches. However, they were put to test in the semi-final clash against India. But Meg Lanning & Co. were up for the challenge and pipped the Women in Blue by five runs in a final-over thriller. Ashleigh Gardner was the star of the contest for her exceptional all-round performance.
Australia have all the experience in the world when it comes to summit clashes. In the seven editions of the T20 World Cup played so far, they have clinched the title on five occasions and finished as runners-up once. The Women in Green and Gold would look to bring their A-game into play in the summit clash and grab their sixth T20 world title.
