Lucas Leiva, a former midfielder for Liverpool, has decided to make his retirement from football official at age 36 owing to a heart problem. Leiva played in approximately 600 games for the club team before finally giving up on his 17-year professional career.

Where did Lucas Leiva play during this football career?

After being acquired by Liverpool in 2007, he spent the majority of his time there. Leiva relocated to Lazio in 2017 and spent five seasons playing in Italy’s Serie A. After rejoining his old team Gremio, Levia made 17 appearances and scored three goals for the team until being sidelined in December 2022 due to a heart condition that was discovered during normal testing.

Leiva announced his retirement and said that, “I would like to thank Gremio for all the support in these three months. Today I am announcing my retirement. It’s been a difficult period.”

He then spoke about how he is ending his career and how a new cycle is beginning in his life. He said, “I am ending where I’d like, not the way I’d like. But I’m sure a new cycle will begin. I had a lot of hope that it could reverse, but it was not the case. My health comes first.”

Despite missing the final in 2012 due to a long-term ailment, Leiva won the League Cup. Also, he aided Liverpool in their 2016 run to the Europa League final. Leiva won the 2019 Coppa Italia medal in Lazio.

The veteran also wrote a heart-touching message on social media.

“The day has come to say goodbye to the field. I confess that it came from greater forces, but I look back and can only be thankful for the career I built”, He said.

“In 2007 I transferred to the giant [that is] Liverpool, which was part of my life for 10 years. It is with great pride that I can say that today Liverpool is my home. I’m proud to be an English citizen and along with my family; I’m Scouser”, he added.
