The Premier League’s officiating has been under fire in recent weeks following a string of controversial VAR calls. However, it is not just VAR decisions that have come under scrutiny, as a new ruling introduced by the FA and the PGMOL has seen players punished for dissent.

Wolves midfielder Mario Lemina was sent off in their win over Southampton last weekend after running over to challenge one of Jarrod Gillet’s decisions. Manchester City defender Ruben Dias was also cautioned for dissent during their victory over Aston Villa.

These incidents have caused much debate, with some questioning whether there is a ‘third man’ rule regarding the third person challenging a referee’s decision. However, this notion has been dismissed by former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher, who has emphasized that players surrounding the referee is the issue.

The FA and PGMOL have vowed to crack down on dissent on the field, with yellow cards to be shown to players who challenge decisions by their demeanour or verbally. This is part of a wider effort to improve player behaviour and respect for referees.

While many may feel that this is a positive step towards improving the game, some have criticized the inconsistency in the application of this rule. In the case of Lemina, his actions were deemed as dissent, while in Dias’ case, it was deemed as players surrounding the referee.

Regardless, it is clear that the authorities are taking a firm stance on player behaviour and are working to ensure that players show respect to the referees on the field. It remains to be seen whether this will have a positive impact on the game and whether we will see a reduction in incidents of dissent.

Overall, the Premier League’s new ruling on dissent has caused much debate and discussion in recent weeks. While some have criticized its inconsistent application, it is a clear indication that the authorities are working to improve player behaviour and respect for referees. Only time will tell whether this ruling will have a positive impact on the game.
