Piers Morgan has reiterated his assertion that during Cristiano Ronaldo’s second stint at Manchester United, the player was not the issue. The British broadcaster cited a previous interview in which Mike Phelan, a former Manchester United coach, claimed that Ronaldo’s high expectations had caused a problem in the team’s locker room at Old Trafford.
Ronaldo’s opinionated mentality and high standards, according to Phelan in an interview alongside Sky Sports (as reported by Mail Sport), caused conflict among his teammates.Morgan tweeted the following in response to a Mail Sport tweet that included Phelan’s interview, as he wrote, “Fascinating interview … Phelan confirming what @Cristiano told me – he wasn’t the problem at United. It was the players who didn’t want to work as hard as him who were the problem..”
Morgan is a crucial player in the breakdown of Cristiano Ronaldo’s relationship with Manchester United since it was in his conversation alongside the British journalist that the Portuguese forward unleashed a vicious assault against his previous employers, United.
Ronaldo harshly criticised his teammates, coach, and club culture during his interview in November 2022. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner reached a point after that when there was no turning back, and he quit the team the following month by mutual consent.
The partnership had started off on a positive note in 2003 when the Portuguese striker had joined the team as a highly regarded youngster. Cristiano Ronaldo rejoined the team in 2021 after his initial stint saw him win the majority of significant prizes, including one Ballon d’Or. His second stint came to an end in December 2022, and before the month’s conclusion, the player had joined Al-Nassr of the Saudi Pro League.
Phelan discussed Cristiano Ronaldo’s second contract with the club, which runs from August 2021 to December 2022, in an interview with Sky Sports (which was published by The Mail as he said, “The second time round, he came in a lot older and a lot more opinionated, strong-willed.”
