Anil Chaprana, who was recently named assistant coach of the Patna Pirates, has a wealth of kabaddi expertise. He has served as the leader of the Red Army as well as Green Army teams in the past.
Chaprana served as U Mumba’s offensive coach in Season 8 of the Pro Kabaddi League before being elevated to head coach in Season 9. They did okay for him with a team full of inexperienced players.
Chaprana discussed India’s prospects in the Asian Games in an exclusive interview with Sportskeeda. The Indian team is determined to get the gold medal back after falling to Iran in 2018.
Chaprana said, “The team is doing well. They did well recently at Asian Kabaddi Championship where they won Gold. We hope that they will continue playing the same and get the Gold in the future as well. India’s chances to win Asian Games are good.”
He provided evidence for his faith in the Indian kabaddi squad’s abilities by pointing to their triumph in the June Asian Kabaddi Championship, which Pawan Sehrawat and his team won.
Anil Chaprana discussed the potential challenges the Indian team would have during the Asian Games in 2023. At the major competition, he believes it will be hardest to beat the Iranians.
Both the men’s as well as women’s kabaddi teams from India failed to take home a gold medal during the 2018 Asian Games, making their performances less than stellar. The Indian men’s kabaddi side had never lost a gold medal match, therefore this was seen as a big shock.
A second-string youthful Iranian squad put up a great battle and nearly defeated a full-strength Indian team even in the Asian Kabaddi Championship. Additionally, according to Chaprana, the Iranian players’ involvement in Pro Kabaddi has given them an excellent understanding of the manner in which the Indian players conduct themselves.
He added that, “The biggest challenge will be the Iranian team,” reckons Anil Chaprana. “The Iranian team is doing really well currently. The Iranians come and play PKL so they know all the Indian players and their tactics.”
