In a recent turn of events at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday, November 12, Bas de Leede of the Netherlands cricket team made history by breaking his father Tim de Leede’s record. Bas surpassed Tim’s record of 14 wickets in the 2003 World Cup, becoming the highest wicket-taker for the Netherlands in the World Cup.

The big moment occurred in the 18th over of India’s innings when Bas de Leede bowled a well-executed slower ball that caught the formidable Rohit Sharma off guard. The Indian captain was dismissed after scoring 61 runs off 54 balls, including two sixes and eight boundaries. Wesley Barresi, positioned at mid-wicket, made a comfortable catch, securing Bas de Leede’s record-breaking wicket.

Bas de Leede’s exceptional performance in the World Cup has not gone unnoticed. Before the India-Netherlands match, he had already taken 14 wickets in eight matches with an economy rate of 7.11 and he took two more wickets in this match to reach the 16 wickets mark in the World Cup. In addition to his bowling prowess, Bas also demonstrated his batting skills, accumulating 127 runs in eight games, including an impressive half-century.

The Netherlands earned their place in the World Cup thanks to Bas de Leede’s outstanding performance during the qualifiers, where he scored 285 runs and claimed 15 wickets in seven matches. His all-round contribution played a crucial role in the team’s qualification.

As the Men in Blue faced off against the Netherlands, India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first. Rohit and Shubman Gill laid a strong foundation with a 91-run partnership. Despite a determined effort by the Dutch bowlers, India managed to set a formidable total of 410 runs in their 50 overs, with centuries by Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul.

India’s undefeated streak in the 2023 World Cup continues as they prepare to take on New Zealand in the upcoming match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on November 15.
