In a shocking declaration that has echoed across the cricketing sphere, Heinrich Klaasen, a prominent player associated with the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has announced his retirement from Test cricket.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has confirmed Klaasen’s decision to retire, signifying the conclusion of his relatively brief Test cricket career.

Heinrich Klaasen to retire from immediate effect

Klaasen played in four Test matches for the Proteas, with his final appearance against the West Indies in March last year.

He now intends to fully focus on the limited-overs format after an exceptionally productive 2023, boasting impressive strike rates of 140.66 in ODIs and 172.71 in T20 internationals.

“After a few sleepless nights wondering if I am making the right decision, I have decided to retire from red-ball cricket. It’s a difficult decision that I have made because it is by far my favourite format of the game,” Klaasen said in his official statement.

“The battles that I faced on and off the field have made me the cricketer I am today. It has been a great journey and I am glad I could have represented my country.

He added: “My baggy Test cap is the most precious cap I have ever been handed. Thanks to everyone that has played a part in my red-ball career and shaped me into the cricketer I am today. But for now a new challenge awaits and I am looking forward to it.”

Following the retirement of Dean Elgar after the New Year’s Test against India, Klaasen has become the second South African player to retire from red-ball cricket.
