In the 48th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) secured a notable victory over Mumbai Indians (MI), prevailing by 4 wickets. Opting to bowl first, LSG effectively contained MI to a modest total of 144 for 7. In reply, LSG chased down the target within 19.2 overs, largely fueled by Marcus Stoinis’ steady innings of 62 runs off 45 balls.
MI’s defeat stemmed from their below-par batting display. Nehal Wadhera emerged as the highest scorer with his contribution of 46 runs off 41 deliveries, followed by Tim David’s brisk 35 off 18 balls. However, beyond these performances, MI struggled to find stability in their batting lineup. Even their captain, Hardik Pandya, departed on the very first ball he faced.
Naveen-ul-Haq gets rid of Hardik Pandya on the first ball
MI batter Tilak Varma was run out on the opening delivery of Naveen-ul-Haq’s over. With his team struggling at 27 for 3, Pandya stepped onto the crease, aiming to stabilize the innings. However, Pandya went back to the dugout without troubling the scorers. Naveen delivered a good length ball at off-stump to Pandya. The MI skipper attempted to play a straight drive but mistimed his shot, resulting in an edge that flew straight into the hands of LSG wicket-keeper KL Rahul.

Pandya’s concerning form
In the ongoing IPL season, Pandya’s performance has been underwhelming, both with the bat and the ball. Over his last 10 matches, he has only managed to secure 6 wickets while conceding 253 runs. With the bat, he has accumulated 197 runs at a strike rate of 150.38. This dip in form is not only worrying for MI but also raises concerns for India, as the 30-year-old all-rounder holds the position of Vice-captain in the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup 2024. If Pandya fails to make a swift turnaround, it could pose challenges for both MI and the Indian team.
