England hopeful Ollie Robinson endured a nightmare over on Wednesday during the County Championship clash between Sussex and Leicestershire. Robinson, known for his aggressive pace bowling, found himself on the receiving end of a brutal assault from Leicestershire batter Louis Kimber.

A nightmare over for Ollie Robinson

The carnage unfolded in the 59th over of Leicestershire’s second innings. Chasing a daunting target of 464, Kimber was already well on his way to a blazing knock, sitting at 72 off 56 balls. Robinson, tasked with stemming the flow of runs, instead became an unwitting catalyst for an explosion.

Robinson’s woes began with a cardinal sin for a fast bowler – three no-balls in a single over. In county cricket, each no-ball incurs a penalty of two runs, adding immediate pressure to the bowler. Kimber, sensing an opportunity, unleashed his fury. He dispatched two towering sixes over the boundary ropes, while also finding the fence with six fours. Even a single snuck through, as Robinson struggled to find any control.

By the over’s end, a battered and bruised Robinson had conceded a staggering 43 runs. The damage breakdown is a testament to Kimber’s dominance: 6, 6nb (4, 2-nb), 4, 6, 4, 6nb (4, 2-nb), 4, 6nb (4, 2-nb), 1.

Second most expensive over in FC cricket

This nightmarish over for Robinson has been etched in First-Class cricket history. It now stands as the second-most expensive over ever bowled, only behind by the infamous effort of former New Zealand spinner Bert Vance in 1989-90.

Vance, bowling in a Shell Trophy match, conceded a mind-boggling 77 runs – an embarrassing feat recorded through a whopping 17 no-balls. While Robinson’s over survived to reach those many runs, it serves as a stark reminder of the fine line between bowling fire and getting burnt in the process.
