Sri Lanka has unveiled a 16-member squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against India, set to take place shortly after the conclusion of the T20I series. This series will allow Sri Lanka to test their mettle against a strong Indian side.

ODI series schedule against India

The ODI series kicks off on August 2, followed by the second match on August 4, concluding with the final match on August 7. All three fixtures will be played at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, a venue known for its lively atmosphere and supportive crowds. This schedule promises a tightly contested series with minimal rest days, adding to the excitement and intensity of the matches.

Leadership and key players

Charith Asalanka has been appointed as the captain for the ODI series, taking over the reins from Kusal Mendis, who previously led the side in the 50-over format. Asalanka’s leadership will be crucial as Sri Lanka aims to build on their recent performances. The squad features a robust top-order lineup with Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, and Kusal Mendis, who have all shown the ability to score big runs. Additionally, star batter Sadeera Samarawickrama has been included, bringing his impressive form and reliability to the team.

Sri Lanka’s bowling attack

The spin attack will be spearheaded by the experienced Wanindu Hasaranga, known for his wicket-taking abilities and economical spells. The spin department is further strengthened by the inclusion of Maheesh Theekshana, Dunith Wellalage, and Akila Dananjaya, providing a variety of spin options to trouble the Indian batters. In the pace department, the formidable duo of Dilshan Madhushanka and Matheesha Pathirana will lead the attack, known for their speed and accuracy. All-rounder Chamika Karunaratne has also been included, adding depth and versatility to both the batting and bowling units.

Injury updates

Dushmantha Chameera, who was ruled out of the T20I series due to bronchitis and a respiratory infection, will miss the ODI series as well. This is a significant blow to the team’s pace attack, as Chameera’s experience and skills are highly valued. Additionally, Nuwan Thushara is unavailable after fracturing his thumb during training before the start of the bilateral series. These injuries present a challenge for Sri Lanka, but also an opportunity for other players to step up and make their mark.
