After failing to make an impact in the first innings – where he was dismissed for just 16 runs – Smith displayed remarkable resilience in the second innings. Playing with determination and aggression, Smith anchored England’s effort by scoring a crucial 67 runs off just 50 balls, including 10 fours and a six. His strike rate of 134.00 injected some much-needed momentum into England’s innings, helping the team post a somewhat respectable target for the Sri Lankan chase.

Sri Lanka finishes Day 3 in strong position

By the close of play on Day 3, Sri Lanka had already made significant strides towards their victory target, reaching 94/1. Pathum Nissanka, Sri Lanka’s star opener, remained unbeaten on 53 from 44 balls, steering the visitors within 125 runs of the win. Nissanka’s composed and fluent innings has placed Sri Lanka in a strong position to clinch the final match of the series.

Although England have already secured the series with victories in the first two Tests, Sri Lanka’s performance in this match highlights their determination to end the series on a high. For England, a victory here would offer a psychological boost heading into future contests, while a loss could dent their morale after what has otherwise been a successful series.

With Day 4 set to resume with Sri Lanka on the brink of victory, all eyes will be on England’s bowling attack to produce a late comeback. However, Sri Lanka’s position looks favourable, and Nissanka’s continued presence at the crease could spell the end of England’s hopes for a clean sweep in this series.
