The announcement of India’s squad for the first Test against Bangladesh has raised eyebrows, particularly with the notable exclusion of right-arm pacer Mohammed Shami. While the return of key players like Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant has garnered attention, the absence of Shami, a crucial part of India’s bowling lineup, has left fans and analysts questioning the reason behind his omission.

Why Mohammed Shami hasn’t been selected for the first Test against Bangladesh?

Shami’s exclusion appears to be primarily linked to his ongoing recovery from injury. The fast bowler has been sidelined for a significant portion of 2024 due to fitness issues stemming from an injury sustained during the ODI World Cup last year. Although there were indications from BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar that Shami might be considered for selection in the Bangladesh series, it seems the selectors opted to prioritize his full recovery over a rushed return.

Reports suggest that Shami is expected to represent Bengal in the upcoming Ranji Trophy, starting on October 11, to regain match fitness before making himself available for national selection. This cautious approach indicates that the management is keen on ensuring Shami is at peak performance for future series, including the subsequent Tests against New Zealand, where he may also miss the first match.

As India prepares for the first Test against Bangladesh from September 19-23 in, the absence of Shami highlights the challenges and dynamics within the squad. While the team welcomes back experienced players like Kohli and Bumrah, the management’s decisions reflect a strategic approach to building a robust lineup for the future.

The cricketing community will be keenly watching Shami’s progress in the Ranji Trophy, as he will be integral to India’s aspirations in the upcoming matches to reach the 2025 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final.
