New Zealand Cricket (NZC) have announced their men’s Test squad for the upcoming tour of India, with Tom Latham set to lead the side in place of Tim Southee, who recently stepped down from captaincy.

Kane Williamson doubtful for India tour

The biggest talking point of the squad announcement is the potential absence of Kane Williamson. The former New Zealand captain is nursing a groin strain and is unlikely to feature in the opening Test against India. However, there is hope that he could return to the side later in the series.

Sam Wells, the New Zealand selector, explained the decision to rest Williamson. “The advice we’ve received is that the best course of action is for Kane to rest and rehabilitate now rather than risk aggravating the injury,” he said in a press release.

However, Wells is hopeful of Williamson’s availability for the latter part of the tour.

“We’re hopeful that if the rehabilitation goes to plan Kane will be available for the latter part of the tour.

“While it’s obviously disappointing to not have Kane available from the start of the tour, it provides an opportunity for someone else to play a role in an important series.”

As a cover for Williamson, New Zealand have included uncapped Mark Chapman in the squad. Wells praised Chapman’s abilities, stating, “We believe Mark is one of our best players of spin and has a proven track-record in the sub-continent.”

He added: “Mark has displayed an ability to play spin proactively in the international arena, and combined with his excellent first-class record, we see him as someone who can succeed in the type of conditions we expect to encounter in India.”

Another notable inclusion in the squad is Ish Sodhi, who will replace Michael Bracewell after the first Test. Bracewell is only available for the series opener in Bengaluru and will return home for the birth of his second child.
