Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have addressed the swirling rumours regarding the potential reappointment of Virat Kohli as captain for the IPL 2025 season. In a statement released by Mo Bobat, RCB’s Director of Cricket, the franchise clarified that no decision has been made regarding Kohli’s return to the leadership role following their split with former captain Faf du Plessis.
Clarification from RCB management
Bobat emphasized that while there has been speculation about Kohli taking up the captaincy again, RCB is still exploring options. “We haven’t made any decision on Virat Kohli returning as a captain. I am sorry to disappoint everyone, but we are still open to options,” he stated on JioCinema. The franchise confirmed that they decided not to retain Faf du Plessis, who led RCB for three seasons but could not secure an IPL title.
Kohli’s retention and leadership history
Kohli has been retained by RCB for INR 21 crore and remains a pivotal figure in the team. He previously captained RCB from 2013 to 2021, making him one of the longest-serving captains in IPL history with 143 matches under his belt. Despite his impressive leadership record, including four playoff appearances and a final in 2016, the team is yet to win an IPL trophy.

Future prospects for RCB
Bobat noted that retaining players like Kohli, along with Rajat Patidar and Yash Dayal, reflects RCB’s strategy to maintain a strong Indian core as they prepare for the mega auction with a purse of INR 83 crore. The management is keen on approaching the auction with an open mind regarding captaincy and aims to make strategic decisions that will enhance their chances of success in future seasons.
Kohli himself has expressed his unwavering commitment to RCB, hinting at his desire to continue playing for the franchise until at least 2027. “At the end of this cycle, it is going to be 20 years that I am going to be playing for RCB,” Kohli said in RCB’s Bold Diaries video, highlighting his deep connection with the team and its fans.
