After being sent in to bat by Sri Lanka, New Zealand struggled to build momentum, with wickets falling at regular intervals. Opener Will Young contributed 26, but it was Mark Chapman who stood out with a splendid 76 off 81 balls, including seven fours and three sixes. He was well-supported by Mitchell Hay, who added a steady 49 off 62 balls.

However, the rest of the batting lineup failed to contribute significantly. Sri Lanka’s bowlers, particularly Maheesh Theekshana (3/31) and Jeffrey Vandersay (3/46), kept the pressure on, ensuring New Zealand were bowled out for 209 in 45.1 overs. Asitha Fernando chipped in with two wickets, while Charith Asalanka and Dunith Wellalage claimed one wicket each.

Kusal Mendis anchors a nervy finish for Sri Lanka

Chasing 210 under overcast conditions, Sri Lanka’s innings was steady but tense. Pathum Nissanka provided a defensive start with 28 off 33 balls, but quick dismissals, including Avishka Fernando (5) and Kamindu Mendis (0), left the hosts in trouble.

Kusal Mendis then took charge, anchoring the innings with a determined 74 off 102 balls, striking six boundaries. While wickets tumbled around him, Kusal displayed exceptional composure, keeping Sri Lanka on track. Lower-order contributions from Janith Liyanage (22), Dunith Wellalage (18) and Maheesh Theekshana (27 not out) proved vital in sealing the victory in 46 overs.

Michael Bracewell was New Zealand’s standout bowler, claiming four wickets for 36 runs in his 10 overs. Mitchell Santner, Glenn Phillips and Nathan Smith each picked up a wicket, but New Zealand’s inability to defend the total was evident as Sri Lanka managed their chase efficiently under pressure.

With this victory, Sri Lanka have secured the three-match series, leading 2-0. The hosts won the first ODI by 45 runs (DLS method) and will now aim for a clean sweep in the final match on Tuesday, November 19, at the same venue.

New Zealand, on the other hand, will look to salvage some pride in the third ODI. Despite moments of brilliance, their batting inconsistencies and inability to capitalize on opportunities have cost them in the series so far.
