Australia’s bowling coach Daniel Vettori will step away from his duties during the first Test against India in Perth to attend the IPL 2025 auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Vettori, who is the head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), will be present at the high-profile auction scheduled for November 24-25.

The first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is set to begin on November 22 at Perth’s Optus Stadium, presenting a scheduling conflict for several IPL-affiliated individuals, including Vettori, Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer, who are in Perth for coaching or commentary roles.

Since his appointment in 2022, Vettori has been an integral part of Australia’s coaching staff across formats, working closely with head coach Andrew McDonald. Cricket Australia (CA) values his expertise highly, allowing him to balance his national coaching responsibilities with franchise commitments. However, this will mark the first instance where Vettori will leave midway through a Test match to attend the IPL auction.

In recent years, Vettori has missed certain series due to franchise obligations, with replacement coaches stepping in during his absence. CA is currently advertising for a full-time national pace bowling coach, likely as a contingency for situations like this.

The decision to prioritize the IPL auction over a marquee Test match highlights the growing influence of franchise cricket and its logistical challenges on the international calendar.

Despite his impending departure, Vettori has been actively involved in Australia’s preparations for the Perth Test. On Monday, he worked closely with the bowling unit at the WACA ground, simulating left-arm orthodox deliveries to help batters prepare for India’s spin ace Ravindra Jadeja.

Australia have also roped in two consultants for the pre-Test training: ex-Australia batter Michael Hussey and former all-rounder Jim Allenby. Both have previously worked with the national team and will assist in the build-up to the match.

Context of the IPL 2025 Auction

The IPL 2025 auction, slated to take place in Saudi Arabia for the first time, is a two-day affair attracting global attention. The timing, however, clashes with one of cricket’s most iconic rivalries, raising questions about the prioritization of franchise commitments over international duties.

Vettori’s move underscores a larger trend where franchise cricket increasingly influences the schedules and roles of international players and coaches.

As Vettori heads to Jeddah, Australia will rely on its remaining coaching staff and consultants to maintain focus against a formidable Indian side.

The Perth Test is the first of five matches in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with subsequent games in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney as part of the Australian summer of cricket.
