Chennai Super Kings had a forgettable IPL 2022 as the four-time champions finished second from the bottom. It was their horrible start to the campaign that saw them lose four games on the trot, with the newly named skipper Ravindra Jadeja relinquishing his position. MS Dhoni took over the reins as the Chennai-based franchise finished again with just four wins to their name.
Following their worrisome display on the field, there were rumours of a fall-out between star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and the team management. However, it all seems like a thing of the past right now as the Yellow Army shifts its focus on adding to its trophy cabinet in the upcoming edition of the tournament.
They made their intentions pretty clear in the IPL 2023 auction after engaging in a bidding war for the highly sought after Aussie all-rounder Cameron Green. However, after losing out on the Aussie to Mumbai Indians, CSK dug deep to rope in England’s talismanic Test skipper Ben Stokes for a whopping INR 16.25 crore.
The arrival of the English all-rounder is a big boost for MS Dhoni’s side as they bid farewell to iconic Caribbean cricketer Dwayne Bravo ahead of the 16th edition of the tournament. Stokes, who would have fond memories of playing along with Dhoni for the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant, will be keen on making his mark in the upcoming tournament.
While star pacer Deepak Chahar’s availability for IPL 2023 has strengthened their bowling unit, young pacer Mukesh Choudhary is doubtful for the initial stages of IPL 2023 as he is recovering from a back injury at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.
Kyle Jamieson’s back injury has also ruled out the Kiwi pacer from the upcoming tournament, prompting CSK into signing Sisanda Magala as his replacement.
The core of the Chennai-based outfit remains the same, but the addition of the English Test skipper gives them an edge in comparison to the last season. Dhoni’s full-fledged return to captaincy will also have a big impact in IPL 2023 as CSK wish to bounce back in style this year.
