Day 4 of the third Ashes Test finally came to an end, and with it, the match as well. After a rain-ridden and significantly shortened Day 3 of the third Test, Australia were bundled out for 224 runs, giving England a target of 251 runs to chase down.
The hosts ended Day 3 with a score of 27 runs unscathed. With Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett in the middle, the Ben Stokes-led side looked to be in the driver’s seat going into Day 4.
Beginning the day, Crawley built on his performance and scored an integral 44 to edge his side closer to a much-needed victory. Furthermore, Duckett failed to make an impact on the game, as he was dismissed for just 23 runs by Mitchell Starc.
After the first wicket, England sent veteran all-rounder Moeen Ali out to bat. However, it did not work, as Ali only managed to add five runs to the scoreboard. Things started to look shaky for the hosts when star batter Joe Root was sent packing for 21 runs in 33 deliveries.
As the third Test seemed to be slipping away from their grasp, youngster Harry Brook stepped up and played a marvelous knock. Brook scored 75 runs in 93 deliveries.
His knock was crucial for the hosts in winning the game and keeping their hopes alive for the rest of the marquee series. Skipper Ben Stokes also failed to go big and only scored 13 runs before he was dismissed.
The winning runs were hit by pacers Chris Woakes and Mark Wood. Woakes amassed 32* runs in 47 deliveries. Whereas Wood scored 16* runs to tip England over the edge and win the game in sensational fashion by three wickets.
After the win, the hosts find themselves alive in the series, and they would be keen on putting in similar performances in the forthcoming games to make their comeback a reality.
