The action continued in the first Ashes Test on Day 3 as Australia resumed their innings on 311/5 with Usman Khawaja (126*) and Alex Carey (52*) at the crease. The duo got the scoreboard moving quickly and brought their 100-run stand for the sixth wicket. However, James Anderson broke the partnership by dismissing Carey (66) early in the day.
Australian captain Pat Cummins came in at number 8 and smacked a couple of sixes to announce his arrival at the crease. He added 34 runs for the eighth wicket with Khawaja (141), who was nearing his 150. Unfortunately, he couldn’t achieve the milestone getting dismissed against Ollie Robinson due to a peculiar field set up by England skipper Ben Stokes.
Following Khawaja’s dismissal, England seamers employed the short-ball ploy against the Australian tailenders and got results immediately with Nathan Lyon (1), Scott Boland (0) and Cummins (38) getting dismissed in a space of 16 runs. As a result, Australia got all out for 386 trailing England by 7 runs.
England openers couldn’t give a good start to their side as Cummins got rid of Ben Duckett (12) with 27 runs on the board. Scott Boland gave England their second blow by dismissing Zak Crawley (7). England were reeling at 28/2 when rain came pouring down and no more play was possible on Day 3.
Top Performers of the Day
Ollie Robinson (3/55)
The right-arm seamer was the pick of the bowlers for England in the first innings with figures of 3/55. He first dismissed well-set Usman Khawaja by destroying his stumps with an accurate yorker. He further cleaned up the tail by dismissing Lyon and Cummins off short deliveries.
Pat Cummins (38, 1/9)
The Australian skipper first scored a crucial 38 lower down the order to get his team close to England’s first innings score. Cummins smacked three sixes during his innings. He later returned to give his team their first strike of the second innings by dismissing Ben Duckett (12) getting him caught at gully.
