Despite having the minimum cut-off point of 14, Delhi Capitals (DC) failed to qualify for the playoffs of IPL 2024 as their net run rate was behind Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). A 47-run loss to RCB in the crucial league match certainly dashed their playoff hopes.

However, with their captain Rishabh Pant leading from the front, the Capitals managed to put up a decent performance this season. Opener Jake Fraser-McGurk was sensational with his power-hitting. Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Mukesh Kumar were impressive, while Abishek Porel produced an exceptional performance with his bat.

At the same time, a few players in the Delhi squad did not get enough opportunities to showcase their talent. They had to be overlooked due to the team combination, which might have had some impact on their campaign.

Here are the three players who were underutilized by Delhi Capitals in IPL 2024:

3. Praveen Dubey

Praveen Dubey has not played a single match this season. The 30-year-old right-arm spinner can trouble the batters with accuracy on line and length. The reason why DC couldn’t afford a spot for Dubey was because of the presence of Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav. However, it is noteworthy that DC tried Lalit Yadav’s off-spin instead of Dubey’s attacking leg-spin, even in the absence of wrist-spinner Kuldeep in a couple of matches.

2. Jhye Richardson

Australian fast bowler Jhye Richardson got to play just one match in the 17th edition. In the absence of injured Mitchell Marsh, Richardson was named in the Playing XI in the 20th match against Mumbai Indians (MI). Though he conceded 40 runs in his four overs, without taking any wickets, DC should have been more patient with the right-arm pacer.

1. Prithvi Shaw

DC tried various opening combos in IPL 2024 starting with David Warner and Mitchell Marsh. Both Australians were removed from the slot and Jake Fraser-McGurk, Prithvi Shaw and Abishek Poral were later experimented. While Fraser-McGurk sealed his position, Shaw failed to do so, though without doing any serious harm.

The right-hander played only eight matches out of 14 matches in IPL 2024. He scored 198 runs, including a half-century, at an impressive strike rate of 163.63. Shaw is a destructive opener and DC have failed to make the most of his potential this season.
