An enthralling two-month period of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 ended with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) lifting their third title. The tournament witnessed many players, both domestic and overseas, setting the big stage ablaze. It was interesting that none of the teams from the 2023 season playoffs made it into the knockouts this season.

Just as the teams failed to maintain consistency, some of the players who had performed well in the past editions also failed to shine this time. Over the years in the league’s history, there have been very few players who have consistently performed in successive seasons. Their failure will leave the team in trouble and the fans disappointed.

Here are five players who were successful in IPL 2022 but flopped in the 2024 season:

5. Quinton de Kock (LSG)

Quinton de Kock joined Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of the 2022 season and played a key role in their playoff qualification. With 508 runs from 15 matches, including a century, the South African opener finished as the third-highest run-scorer in the tournament.

His impressive numbers convinced the management to retain him for the next two seasons, but the southpaw failed to pay them back in the 2024 IPL. In 11 innings, De Kock scored just 250 runs at an average of 22.72 and a below-par strike rate of 134.40. Notably, LSG had one of the worst opening pairs this season, which certainly had a big impact on their performance.

4. Hardik Pandya (MI)

Hardik Pandya had a dream run with Gujarat Titans (GT). He led the Ahmedabad franchise to glory in their maiden season (2022) and led them to the finals in the following season. However, the star all-rounder was traded to Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of the 2024 season and had a forgettable experience with them.

Apart from his captaincy excellence, Pandya also led the batting unit in the 2022 season with 487 runs at an average of 44.27 including four fifties. He also took eight wickets. But in his comeback season with MI, the 30-year-old managed just 216 runs from 13 innings and saw his team finish at the bottom of the points table.

3. Deepak Hooda (LSG)

Deepak Hooda enjoyed his best IPL season with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in 2022, but his performance this year has been quite the opposite. The middle-order batter had amassed 451 runs in 14 innings, including four half-centuries, in LSG’s maiden IPL season.

The Lucknow franchise retained Hooda for the next two seasons but he failed to deliver the needful for them in the 2024 season. The right-hander managed to score just 145 runs at an average of 18.12. His poor performance in the middle-order put pressure on Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran.

2. David Warner (DC)

Having won the Orange Cap three times and leading Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to their maiden title, David Warner is undoubtedly one of the legends of the IPL. The veteran opener joined Delhi Capitals (DC) ahead of the 2022 season and top-scored for them with 432 runs at an average of 48 including five fifties.

Expectations were high that the Australian would once again deliver in the 2024 season, but this time he completely struggled to find the runs. Warner scored just 168 runs in eight innings at an average of 21.0 and a strike rate of 134.40. He was dropped from the playing XI after a series of poor performances.

1. Rashid Khan (GT)

Rashid Khan probably had one of the worst IPL seasons this year. He was been able to shine in both departments and is one of the main reasons behind Gujarat Titans (GT)’s underwhelming campaign. The Afghanistan all-rounder played a crucial role in GT’s title win. He took 19 wickets at an economy of 6.60, scoring 91 runs at a staggering strike rate of 206.82.

Fast forward to 2024, Rashid seemed to have lost his edge in the spin attack. He never looked threatening and managed to pick up just 10 wickets in 12 matches. The Afghan captain also failed to make much of an impact in the batting department.
