The group stage of the T20 World Cup 2024 is nearing its end with almost all the teams having completed four matches each. The first and second-placed teams from each of the four groups will now compete in the Super Eight stage starting from June 19.

India and United States from Group A, Australia and England from Group B, Afghanistan and West Indies from Group C, and Bangladesh will probably join South Africa to represent Group D. With some associate nations putting up a serious fight, big names like New Zealand, Pakistan and Sri Lanka failed to qualify for the next round.

Unlike regular T20 games, the tournament has so far witnessed low-scoring encounters, with the batters facing some serious challenges in finding runs due to the tricky nature of the pitches. Many big guns who were expected to light up the mega event with their scintillating batting displays have disappointed in the league stage and had a significant impact on their team’s performance.

Here are the most overrated batters of the top 10 teams in the league stage of the T20 World Cup 2024:

10. Azmatullah Omarzai (Afghanistan)

Afghanistan’s bowling has been excellent as usual, but with their batting starting to fire, they look to be one of the top contenders this time around. However, it is important to note that most of their batting credit goes to opening batters Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran. Azmatullah Omarzai has failed to showcase his all-round ability as he scored just 40 runs in three matches.

9. Litton Das (Bangladesh)

Litton Das is one of the most experienced campaigners in the Bangladesh team who has played over 80 T20I matches so far. However, the keeper-batter failed to bring his expertise to bear in the ongoing World Cup. Das was dismissed for single-digit scores in two of the three matches. His highest score was 36 in the first match against Sri Lanka, but that came at a concerning strike rate of 94.74.

8. Charith Asalanka (Sri Lanka)

Charith Asalanka has been one of the most reliable batters in the middle order for Sri Lanka in recent years. The aggressive striker was expected to play a key role in helping the team qualify for the Super 8s. But Asalanka’s form was a reflection of his team’s overall performance in the tournament. The right-hander managed just 25 runs from two matches at a disappointing strike rate. His only standout performance was against the Netherlands as he scored a match-winning 46 off just 21 balls to end the campaign on a positive note.

7. Rovman Powell (West Indies)

West Indies have qualified for the Super 8 stage with three straight wins. Rovman Powell has led the team brilliantly so far, but has the Windies skipper been able to lead his side from the front? In three matches, the big-hitter contributed just 39 runs to the batting department. Powell will have to work on his batting before heading into the crucial juncture of the tournament.

6. Finn Allen (New Zealand)

Finn Allen managed to earn the tagline of an explosive batter in a limited-overs format. But the New Zealand youngster seems to be struggling to prove his mettle on the big stage. The right-hander scored just 35 runs in three matches, including a golden duck against Afghanistan. His poor performance in the top order was one of the reasons why the BlackCaps failed to qualify for the Super 8s.

5. Glenn Maxwell (Australia)

Glenn Maxwell had a lacklustre campaign in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), where he struggled to score runs in almost every match he played. However, there was talk that Maxwell is a different player when it comes to the national team or mega tournaments. But it seems the all-rounder’s lean patch is far from over. The Melbourne all-rounder bagged a golden duck against Oman and scored just 39 runs in the next two innings of the ongoing event. He will be eager to get some runs under his belt in the Super Eights.

4. Babar Azam (Pakistan)

With 122 runs from four matches, Babar Azam ended as Pakistan’s highest scorer in the 2024 World Cup. But has it had any positive effect on the team? The Men in Green suffered a shock defeat to the USA in their opening match. Babar top-scored with 44 runs but at a strike rate of 102.33. He failed against India (13 off 10 balls) and scored 33 against Canada at a strike rate of 100. With just one victory from three matches, Babar’s team has failed to qualify for the Super 8s, and won in their last match against Ireland, but to no avail, as it was a dead rubber encounter.

3. Quinton de Kock (South Africa)

Quinton de Kock is now a shadow of his former self. The southpaw had endured a torrid campaign in IPL 2024 and is still not out of the rough patch. Although South Africa won all their league-stage matches, de Kock’s contribution was just 40 runs. The opening batter struggled to find runs and has been one of the biggest cause of concern for the Proteas, who are yet to lose a game in the tournament so far.

 2. Shivam Dube (India)

Shivam Dube’s selection was somewhat controversial as he usurped the spot of Rinku Singh. Since being named in India’s 15-man World Cup squad, Dube has been dismissed for single-digit scores in the IPL 2024. Known for his big-hitting prowess in the middle overs, the southpaw failed to shine in the World Cup warm-up match and the first two league matches. However, the young all-rounder, to some extent, managed to gain a bit of confidence with an unbeaten 31 off 35 in India’s win over the USA.

1. Will Jacks (England)

Will Jacks was expected to be England’s trump card in the ongoing World Cup, especially after his heroics in IPL 2024. The right-hander showcased his ability to take the game away from the opposition single-handedly with some ruthless batting displays.

But his performance in the mega event was against expectations, scoring just 15 runs in two innings. He was also dropped from the Playing XI for England’s final group-stage match against Namibia.
