IPL 2023: Chennai Super Kings vs Punjab Kings, Match 41 Review

Punjab Kings defeated Chennai Super Kings by four wickets in the 41st match of the 2023 Indian Premier League at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday, April 30. CSK and PBKS are placed fourth and fifth in the IPL 2023 points table with 10 points each.

CSK opted to bat first after winning the toss. Opener Devon Conway scored an unbeaten 92 as the Yellow Army posted a target of 200 runs for the Shikhar Dhawan-led side. For PBKS, Arshdeep Singh, Sam Curran, Rahul Chahar, and Sikandar Raza picked one wicket each.

CSK openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway handed CSK a solid start as they were 57/0 in the powerplay. However,  Sikandar Raza provided PBKS with a massive breakthrough as he dismissed Gaikwad for 37 runs in the 10th over. Meanwhile, Conway continued to trouble the PBKS bowlers as the Kiwi wicketkeeper-batter scored a majestic half-century off just 30 balls. Notably, it was his fifth fifty in the ongoing IPL season. 

Arshdeep Singh provided Punjab Kings with another breakthrough and ended Shivam Dube’s (28 off 17) cameo. Conway stood like a huge wall for CSK after Rahul Chahar dismissed Moeen Ali and Sam Curran removed Ravindra Jadeja. The Kiwi remained unbeaten at 92 off 52 balls while skipper MS Dhoni smashed two sixes on the last two balls as CSK scored 200/4 in 20 overs.

During the chase PBKS openers Prabhsimran Singh and Shikhar Dhawan made a steady start for their side. However, Tushar Deshpande provided CSK with their first breakthrough as he dismissed Dhawan for 28. Despite losing a wicket, the visitors had a terrific outing in the powerplay as they were 62/1 (6 overs). Jadeja came to the attack and struck twice, dismissing Prabhsimran and Atharva Taide. 

Later Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran produced a much-needed partnership. However, Deshpande dismissed Livingstone and Matheesha Pathirana removed Curran to provide some hope for the home team. Later Jitesh Sharma (21 off 10) played a cameo as PBKS registered a four-wicket win in a last-ball thriller. For CSK, Deshpande claimed a three-wicket haul, while Jadeja picked two wickets and Pathirana scalped one.

Best batter of the match

Devon Conway led the charge for CSK as they opted to bat first after winning the toss. The opener smashed an unbeaten 92 off 52 deliveries, including 16 fours and one six. The half-century he scored was his fifth in the ongoing IPL season. 

Best bowler of the match

Tushar Deshpande claimed a three-wicket haul in CSK’s home match against PBKS. He dismissed skipper Shikhar Dhawan, Liam Livingstone, and Jitesh Sharma and conceded 49 runs in his four-over spell. 

What’s next for both teams?

CSK will take on Lucknow Super Giants in their upcoming fixture on May 3 at the 

Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow. PBKS, on the other hand, will play Mumbai Indians at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali on the same day.
