IPL 2023: Mumbai Indians vs Rajasthan Royals, Match 42 Review

Mumbai Indians defeated Rajasthan royals by six wickets in the 42nd match of the 2023 Indian Premier League at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, April 30. With this win, MI moved to the seventh spot in the IPL 2023 points table with eight points.

RR skipper Sanju Samosn won the toss and opted to bat first. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a century as RR posted 212 in 20 overs. For MI, Arshad Khan picked three wickets, while Piyush Chawla picked two and Riley Meredith and Jofra Archer snared one scalp each.

RR openers Jaiswal and Jos Buttler produced a flying start as the visiting side was 65/0 in the powerplay. However, Piyush Chawla produced a much-needed breakthrough for MI as he got the wicket of Buttler (18). Meanwhile, Arshad Khan picked his first wicket of the night, dismissing skipper Samson. Chawla struck again, dismissing Devdutt Padikkal for just two runs.

However, Jaiswal continued his power-hitting as RR were 113/3 in 12 overs. The UP-born batter raced to his maiden IPL century in only 53 balls after MI bowlers cheaply dismissed Jason Holder, Shimron Hetmyer, and Dhruv Jurel. The 21-year-old opener continued to trouble MI bowlers as he went on to score 124 off 62 balls, smacking 16 fours and eight sixes in his innings, before getting dismissed by Arshad in the last over. 

During the chase, MI got off to a good start, but Sandeep Sharma struck, in the beginning, dismissing MI skipper Rohit Sharma in the second over. However, Cameron Green came in and led the charge for MI as he hit Trent Boult for three consecutive fours in the third over. He put up a much-needed partnership with keeper-batter Ishan Kishan as MI were 58/1 in the powerplay. The Australian scored a quick 44 off just 26 balls before being dismissed by Ashwin.

Suryakumar Yadav came in and batted impressively to keep MI in the game before being dismissed by Trent Boult. He scored 55 off 29 deliveries, including eight boundaries and two maximums. Later, Tim David led the charge for MI, scoring an unbeaten 45 off just 14 balls and handed MI a six-wicket win, with three balls remaining. For RR, Ashwin picked two wickets while Sandeep Sharma and Boult grabbed one each.

Best batter of the match

Yashasvi Jaiswal led RR from the front as he scored his maiden IPL century against MI. He smashed 124 off 62 before being dismissed by Arshad Khan. His knock was studded with 16 fours and eight maximums.

Best bowler of the match

Arshad Khan claimed a three-wicket haul for MI against RR. He dismissed skipper Sanju Samson, Shimron Hetmeyr, and centurion Yashhasvi Jaiswal. He conceded just 39 runs in his three-over spell. 

What’s next for both teams?

MI will take on Punjab Kings in their upcoming fixture on May 3 at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali. RR, on the other hand, will play Gujarat Titans at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur on May 5.
