Harry Brook, the young England batsman, has dealt a big blow to Delhi Capitals (DC) by withdrawing from the IPL 2024 season citing personal reasons. This comes just months after his sudden withdrawal from the England Test series in India earlier this year.

Brook a late withdrawal from both England and IPL:

Brook, purchased by the Delhi-based franchise for INR 4 crore, has become the latest player to pull out of the lucrative tournament at the eleventh hour. His absence mirrors his withdrawal from the England Test squad in India, where the ECB requested privacy for the player and his family.

IPL franchises frustrated by player pullouts:

This trend of late withdrawals due to personal reasons has left IPL franchises fuming. These unexpected decisions disrupt their auction strategies and leave them scrambling for replacements on short notice. Franchise officials are reportedly considering approaching the BCCI to address this issue.

Brook isn’t the first player to pull out of the IPL at the last moment. Players like Jason Roy, Pat Cummins, Alex Hales and Mitchell Starc have made similar withdrawals in the past.

Brook’s IPL stint and uncertain future:

Brook’s IPL record is less impressive. Despite being acquired by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for a hefty INR 13.25 crore last season, he managed only 190 runs in 11 matches. This underwhelming performance likely contributed to his release before the 2024 auction, where DC picked him up for a significantly lower price.

Brook’s withdrawal creates uncertainty for both DC and the BCCI. It remains to be seen how the league will address the issue of late player pullouts and ensure a smoother auction process for franchises.
