The role of the captains was pivotal, with their decisions significantly impacting their teams’ successes and failures.

Role of captains

Team performances fluctuated, with some squads excelling early on and others gaining momentum towards the end. The impact of captaincy was crucial, influencing both successes and failures. Let’s have a look at the evaluation of the captains’ performances based on their teams’ outcomes.

Here are the captains’ ratings after the league stage of IPL 2024

Hardik Pandya (3/10)

Mumbai Indians Captain
Matches: 14, Wins: 4, Losses: 10

Hardik Pandya struggled to lead Mumbai Indians effectively, resulting in a disappointing campaign. The team’s performance was inconsistent, and critical decision-making issues hampered their progress. Under Hardik, Mumbai finished at the bottom spot in the points table and were the first to be eliminated from the playoffs race.

Sam Curran (3.5/10)

Punjab Kings Captain (midway after Shikhar Dhawan’s injury)
Matches: 14, Wins: 5, Losses: 9

Taking over mid-season, Sam Curran faced a challenging task. Despite his efforts, Punjab Kings couldn’t turn their fortunes around, and the team ended the league stage with a subpar record. Though there were quite a few matches where Punjab were in control of the game but still ended up being on the losing side.

Shubman Gill (4/10)

Gujarat Titans Captain
Matches: 14, Wins: 5, Losses: 7

Shubman Gill had an average outing as captain of the Gujarat Titans. While there were glimpses of brilliance, the team lacked consistency, resulting in a below-par performance overall. Gill did a good job with the bat scoring 426 runs in 12 games but others didn’t step up and hence GT lacked consistent performances.

KL Rahul (4.5/10)

Lucknow Super Giants Captain
Matches: 14, Wins: 7, Losses: 7

KL Rahul led the Lucknow Super Giants to a balanced record. His leadership saw the team securing as many wins as losses, reflecting a season of ups and downs. They started well but lost the momentum in the midway. LSG did make a good comeback on the latter stages but it was too late for them to go further in the tournament.

Rishabh Pant (4.5/10)

Delhi Capitals Captain
Matches: 14, Wins: 7, Losses: 7

Similar to Rahul, Rishabh Pant‘s captaincy resulted in an equal number of wins and losses. The Delhi Capitals displayed potential but couldn’t consistently dominate the league stage. DC had a worst start but they did accelerate as the tournament progressed. However, lack of team’s overall consistent show led them to finish at the sixth spot.

Ruturaj Gaikwad (5.5/10)

Chennai Super Kings Captain
Matches: 14, Wins: 7, Losses: 7

Ruturaj Gaikwad guided Chennai Super Kings through a steady campaign. The team showed resilience but lacked the extra push needed to secure a better standing and even the skipper had a disappointing outing with the bat. They did manage to reach near to playoffs but a close defeat against RCB in the virtual knockout ended their campaign this season.

Faf du Plessis (5.5/10)

Royal Challengers Bengaluru Captain
Matches: 14, Wins: 7, Losses: 7

Under Faf du Plessis, Royal Challengers Bengaluru had a balanced season. The team showed flashes of brilliance but fell short in crucial moments, ending with a middle-of-the-pack record. However, their performance in the latter stages of the league matches was extraordinary leading them to secure a spot in the playoffs.

Sanju Samson (6.5/10)

Rajasthan Royals Captain
Matches: 14, Wins: 8, Losses: 5

Sanju Samson led Rajasthan Royals to a commendable record, winning 8 out of their 14 matches. His leadership was instrumental in the team’s strong performance, though they faced tough competition. Notably, Rajasthan were too strong till the mid-way but string of defeats disrupted their campaign. Though, RR managed to secure the third spot and book playoffs berth, they would be disappointed with their performances in the latter stages of the league games.

Pat Cummins (7.5/10)

Sunrisers Hyderabad Captain
Matches: 14, Wins: 8, Losses: 5

Pat Cummins excelled as the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad. His strategic acumen and ability to inspire his team were evident, leading to a solid campaign and a respectable standing. Under Cummins, SRH managed to destroy oppositions bowling attacks with several 200+ scores including the highest-ever total of 287/3 in the history of the cash-rich league.

Shreyas Iyer (8/10)

Kolkata Knight Riders Captain
Matches: 14, Wins: 9, Losses: 3

Shreyas Iyer stood out as the top captain of the league stage, leading Kolkata Knight Riders to an impressive record of 9 wins and only 3 losses. His exceptional leadership and decision-making were key to KKR’s success. Under Iyer, KKR came up with top notch performances and once they acquired the top spot, the 2-time champions never left it and finished the league stage as the table toppers. No wonder, they were the first team to qualify for the playoffs this season.
