The cricketing world is abuzz with excitement as the Indian Premier League (IPL) gears up for its 2024 season opener on March 22. The highly anticipated match will witness the eternal rivalry between two cricketing powerhouses, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), unfolding at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Faf Du Plessis’ journey: From CSK mainstay to RCB skipper
Faf du Plessis, the seasoned campaigner and former Chennai Super Kings stalwart, has found himself in a new role as the captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore. Du Plessis’ association with CSK dates back to 2012, where he emerged as a key figure in the team’s lineup, showcasing his batting prowess as an opener. With a commendable record of over 2700 runs in 92 matches, the Proteas star became synonymous with CSK’s success, playing an instrumental role in their triumph in the 2021 season.
However, the winds of change swept through the IPL as Du Plessis transitioned to the Royal Challengers Bangalore camp following his release from CSK before the 2022 mega auction. Tasked with leading RCB, Du Plessis now embarks on a new chapter in his IPL journey.
Du Plessis names the greatest captain
In a candid interview with Star Sports leading up to IPL 2024, Du Plessis took a moment to acknowledge the profound impact of MS Dhoni on his career and leadership style. Reflecting on his formative years at Chennai Super Kings, Du Plessis expressed gratitude for the invaluable lessons learned under Dhoni’s tutelage.
“He (Dhoni) is the greatest ever captain, and I am very lucky that I have spent some time with him over the years… it really shaped me,” remarked Du Plessis, emphasizing Dhoni’s pivotal role in shaping his approach to leadership.

Mutual respect amidst rivalry
Despite the intense rivalry between CSK and RCB, Du Plessis emphasized the deep respect he holds for Dhoni, likening their relationship to that of siblings on the field. As anticipation mounts for the blockbuster opener, Du Plessis acknowledged the significance of facing off against the iconic figure of Indian cricket.
“But obviously when you get on the field, it’s such a great match, the RCB-Chennai match, it goes back so much with the two icons, or two of the three icons of Indian cricket. I think the reason why Chennai is so loved and followed is MS Dhoni and the reason why RCB is so loved and passionate is because of Virat Kohli so it’s special for me to have had time with both of them so I’m very lucky,” Du Plessis remarked, highlighting the historical context and prestige surrounding the clash between the two franchises.
