The cricketing fraternity, especially the fans of Delhi Capitals, are currently in a state of jubilation as Rishabh Pant recently received the green light from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to participate in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. After a year-long hiatus due to injuries sustained in a car accident, Pant’s return to the field has been eagerly awaited by fans and players alike.

It is worth mentioning that Pant’s journey back to cricketing action has been nothing short of remarkable and his determination and resilience have been truly inspiring following the unfortunate car crash in 2022, which resulted in multiple surgeries. The announcement of his clearance for IPL 2024 has now sparked immense excitement and anticipation among cricket enthusiasts.

Reflecting on his emotions upon receiving the news during an interaction with TOI, Pant expressed his elation and gratitude. However, he also emphasized the importance of staying grounded and not succumbing to the pressure of expectations.

“Amazing feeling. This was the thing we were waiting for. It’s been so long. I think you can still cope with a layoff of three to six months. But when it goes beyond that, it starts taking a toll. I just want to go out there and play and have fun. Not thinking about the future too much, because (then) you put too much pressure on yourself. Looking forward to each day as it comes,” said Pant.

Acknowledging his initial anxiety while awaiting medical clearance, Pant highlighted the invaluable support he received from the BCCI and the National Cricket Academy (NCA). He credited BCCI Secretary Jay Shah for his personal involvement in Pant’s recovery process. He then reminisced how he was keen to return to action during the England tour of India 2024 but was advised to adopt a cautious approach to prevent undue strain on his body. The 26-year-old expressed gratitude for the BCCI’s methodical strategy in gradually ramping up his workload, ensuring his return to competitive cricket in a prudent and sustainable fashion to not stress his body.

“I was anxious waiting to be declared fit. I was trying to get fit before the Test series against England. BCCI and NCA were very helpful. BCCI secretary Jay Shah took personal interest. They didn’t want to rush me to the longest format. They slowly built up the workload. That was the best part of the recovery. You have to appreciate if someone takes care of you like that. They suggested that I start with T20s and then increase the workload,” he added.

Pant all set for a comeback on 23rd March

As Pant gears up to lead Delhi Capitals in IPL 2024, his return holds significant significance not only for the franchise but also for the cricketing community at large. With the IPL slated to kick off on March 22nd and Delhi Capitals set to play their first match against Punjab Kings on the 23rd, all eyes will be on Pant as he makes his highly anticipated comeback to competitive cricket.
