Aakash Chopra on the replacement of Tilak Varma

With the T20I series between India and New Zealand on the horizon, discussions regarding squad composition have intensified, particularly concerning the replacement for the unavailable Tilak Varma. Notably, the star Indian cricketer has been ruled out of the first three T20Is. He recently underwent surgery for an abdominal issue and has since been discharged from the hospital, but will need a period of rehabilitation before making his return to competitive cricket.

Weighing in on the debate, former Indian cricketer turned commentator Aakash Chopra has shared his take regarding who can take place of Tilak in the side.

In a video shared on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Chopra was unequivocal in his choice. He advocated for the immediate inclusion of Shreyas Iyer, affectionately referring to him as “Sarpanch sahab,” citing his proven track record and ability to anchor the innings.

“Who can it be? Shreyas Iyer. ‘Sarpanch’ sahab should be picked automatically,” Chopra asserted, emphasizing that Iyer’s selection should be a straightforward decision for the selectors given the current requirements of the team.

Recent form and IPL heroics

Chopra highlighted Iyer’s recent domestic form as a primary reason for his endorsement. He pointed out that Iyer has been amongst the runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, demonstrating his readiness for international duty. Furthermore, Chopra recalled Iyer’s explosive performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL), noting that the batter had set the IPL on fire. According to the former opener, the specific vacancy in the squad aligns perfectly with Iyer’s strengths.

Chopra also touched upon Iyer’s previous omission from the Asia Cup squad. While he acknowledged that the exclusion was understandable at the time, he hinted that it felt “slightly unfair” given the batter’s caliber. He believes the upcoming series against New Zealand presents the perfect moment to rectify that and utilize Iyer’s experience in the middle order.

“He is already playing well and scored in the Vijay Hazare Trophy too. Even when Iyer was not picked in the Asia Cup, it felt slightly unfair, but it was understandable. But there is an opportunity for a middle-order role here. He is also an experienced player and set the IPL on fire. He fits the bill, and Shreyas Iyer gets my vote,” Chopra added.
