Sunil Gavaskar and the Australian team with the BGT Trophy

The thrill of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy came to an end as Australia defeated India in the fifth and final Test match to clinch a 3-1 series win. With this, Australia’s long wait of getting a hold of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has finally come to an end after 10 years. Amidst celebration from the home team, a slip-up during the presentation of the trophy has caught the attention of cricket fans and analysts.

Sunil Gavaskar wasn’t invited to present the BGT 2024-25

In a major development at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), the Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar who shares his name along with former Australian cricketer Allan Border at the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, was not invited on stage to present the trophy to the winning captain Pat Cummins, along with his Australian counterpart. The 75-year-old former Indian skipper stood 100 metres away from the presentation site while Border was called on the stage to present the prestigious trophy.

Later on, the Indian legend recalled the incident during a discussion with News Corp and remarked that he would’ve loved presenting the trophy to the winning captain.

“I certainly would have loved to have been there for the presentation. After all it is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and it is about Australia and India. I mean, I am here at the ground. To me it should not matter Australia won when it comes to the presentation. They played the better cricket so they won. That’s fine. I would have been happy to present the trophy with my good friend Allan Border,” Gavaskar said.

Cricket Australia accept their fault

After the news of Gavaskar being snubbed from the presentation of the trophy became a talking point in the cricketing world, Cricket Australia came out and admitted a major fault on their part.

“We acknowledge it would have been preferable if both Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar had been asked to go on stage,” a CA spokesperson said in a statement accepting their mistake. However, Cricket Australia also confirmed that Gavaskar was made aware of the fact that he would have presented the trophy to Indian skipper Jasprit Bumrah if the visiting side would’ve won the Sydney Test and retained the trophy.
