On Day 2 of the first Test match between South Africa and Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Kyle Verreynne has etched his name in the record books. The young wicket-keeper batter has become the second South African to score a Test century against Bangladesh, following in the footsteps of the legendary Mark Boucher.
Record-breaking performance against Bangladesh
Verreynne achieved this remarkable feat on Day 2 of the Test, reaching the three-figure mark with a composed knock of 100 runs off 132 balls. His innings was crucial in stabilizing South Africa after they found themselves in a precarious position at 99/5, still trailing by seven runs. Teaming up with Wiaan Mulder, Verreynne forged a significant partnership worth 119 runs for the eighth wicket, helping the Proteas recover and eventually post a substantial total.
Notably, this innings also saw Verreynne surpass Boucher’s long-standing record for the highest individual score by a South African wicket-keeper in Tests on Bangladesh soil. Boucher’s previous record stood at just 71 runs, set back in 2003. Verreynne has also become the third South African wicketkeeper after AB de Villiers and Quinton de Kock to scored a Test hundred in Indian subcontinent.
Kyle Verreynne: A rising star for South Africa
Before this match, Verreynne had featured in 18 Test matches, accumulating 719 runs at an average of 27.65. This century marks his second in Test cricket, alongside three half-centuries. Verreynne’s consistent performance and ability to play under pressure have made him a vital asset for South Africa, especially as they navigate crucial fixtures in the World Test Championship (WTC).
Following his impressive knock, Verreynne celebrated in style, mimicking the bow of Indian cricketer Shubman Gill, signaling his excitement and acknowledgment of the achievement. This moment adds another feather to his cap as he continues to develop his reputation in international cricket.

Dhaka Test: A tight contest
The match has been a rollercoaster for both teams. Bangladesh, batting first, crumbled for a mere 106 runs, with Kagiso Rabada, Mulder and Keshav Maharaj each claiming crucial wickets to dismantle the batting lineup. In response, South Africa faced early setbacks, leaving them vulnerable until Verreynne’s partnership with Mulder provided much-needed stability. South Africa eventually bundled out for 308 boasting a healthy lead of 202 runs. Both teams currently occupy 6th and 7th positions in the WTC standings, making this Test a vital encounter in their campaign.

Kyle Verreynne bats number seven for South Africa but would probably be good enough to bat in West Indies top five and never hold a drop.
